A Solution For Sensitive Teeth

Fenton MO General DentistryFor those with sensitive teeth, the holiday season, with its treats and celebratory beverages is a cruel reminder of some of the things they’ve been forced to give up because of their tooth pain. If you are one of the millions of individuals experiencing tooth sensitivity, you understand first-hand how the aching and throbbing around your teeth can place a damper on your life. Fortunately, there are a number of solutions for reducing your tooth pain and caring for your sensitive teeth.

Perhaps you are unsure of how teeth become sensitive. Beneath the tooth’s enamel is the dentin, which is a porous material with nerve endings and microtubules. When tooth enamel is damaged or weakened, exposing the dentin, this is when teeth become sensitive. Yet, the question becomes, “what causes tooth enamel to weaken or break down?”

First, when an individual brushes his/her teeth aggressively, tooth enamel can wear away. Typically, when tooth enamel is affected by heavy brushing, gum tissues also begin to recede, or move away from teeth. This creates another problem, as dentin closest to the tooth’s root is exposed.

Next, imagine that an individual eats a diet high in acidic foods or beverages such as high sugar carbohydrates, fruits, sports drinks or sticky candy. This creates the perfect storm for experiencing tooth sensitivity, as acids wreak havoc on tooth enamel. Furthermore, these factors increase the person’s risk of tooth decay, cavities and periodontal (gum) disease.

Given the way that individuals brush their teeth, their diet and susceptibility to tooth decay, it’s easy to see how tooth enamel becomes damaged. On a lighter note, however, dentists provide invaluable insight into healthy habits and remedies to strengthen and repair teeth. When it comes to diet, WebMD provides the following suggestions for fighting the effects of acids on teeth:

  • Fiber-rich fruits and vegetables
  • Cheese
  • Milk
  • Plain yogurt

On the other hand, dentists may provide in-office fluoride treatments or restorative services such as replacing an old filling or repairing a chipped tooth to eliminate tooth pain and sensitivity.
