Does visiting the dentist make you nervous? Fearful? If so, you’re in the company of nearly 75 million Americans that experience some degree of fear about going to the dentist. Whether you’ve had a traumatic experience, or you’re afraid of needing extensive dental work, Sedation Dentistry provides a way for patients to keep calm during their dental visit.

With varying levels of sedation dentistry, more and more patients are reporting positive dental experiences, and are committed to better oral health. Widely used for various dental procedures, Inhaled Minimal Sedation allows patients to remain fully awake while being very relaxed. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is combined with oxygen and inhaled through a mask placed over the nose. In other cases, Oral Sedation may prove to be a better method of sedation. Typically, this is given in a pill form, and has effects similar to Valium. A larger dose may be given, depending on the patient and the treatment. For dental procedures requiring more time, a sedative is given through an IV. With IV Moderate Sedation, dentists have the ability to continuously monitor and adjust the level of sedative throughout the procedure. Lastly, Deep Sedation or Anesthesia is also an option. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure when this level of sedation is given.
