Proper Dental Implant Aftercare
Dental implant restoration is something that is considered as the closest to real teeth; anyone who has been struggling with tooth loss will surely consider this treatment. What sets it apart from other options is the fact that it replaces not only the visible portion of the teeth but also its support underneath. With implants, not only will patients feel confident with a complete set of teeth, but they can also use the restoration just like their real ones.
For our patients at Sugar Creek Family Dental who are planning to avail of dental implants but are unsure of the best aftercare to perform, here is a list of tips we prepared.
Control bleeding
Make sure to change the gauze every 45 to 60 minutes until the bleeding stops, which is usually after two to three hours. Aside from this, it is expected for bleeding to occur for up to 48 hours slightly. Manage this by biting on a moistened roll/fold of gauze that is placed over the surgical site. Bite firmly to apply constant biting pressure. As much as possible, keep the tongue and fingers away from the surgical site.
Maintain a semi-upright position by sitting on a reclining chair or in bed using two pillows. Avoid drinking through a straw, spitting, and smoking. If the patient experiences excessive bleeding on the day of the surgery that continues the day after, make sure to contact our dental practice.
Take prescribed antibiotics
Prevent infection by taking antibiotics as advised by the dental professional.
Limit activities
Following the installation of dental implants, make sure to keep physical activities to a minimum to avoid bleeding and throbbing. During recovery, the patient may not get proper nourishment. As a result, it causes them to weaken; further reducing their ability to exercise.
Manage swelling
It is normal for swelling to occur after surgery. To reduce this, use an ice pack or a plastic bag or towel with ice against the area where the dental implant procedure took place. Make sure to perform this continuously for the first 48 hours. If swelling is still there after two days, use moist warm packs to the outside of the face.
Observe diet
In the first day of the procedure, it is best to drink plenty of fluids. While the mouth is still numb, avoid any hot substances. Patients are advised to consume soft foods on the day of the surgery then return to a more solid diet as instructed. In the meantime, avoid chewing directly over the implant until the restoration is complete. As much as possible, avoid foods like nuts, chips, popcorn, and sunflower seeds that may lodge in the surgical sites.
Aside from the ones provided above, make sure to follow the advice of the dentist about oral hygiene and to minimize pain. If all these tips are followed, the patient is sure to have a successful recovery.
